Welcome to Bury Archaeological Group.

Our membership is relatively small and informally based. Members pursue their individual interests, but come together for fieldwork, excavations and conferences etc.

Aims of the Group include:

•To create a better understanding of the origin and history of communities in Bury District, to bring a clearer perspective of their position and influence in society as a whole.

•To convey results of archaeological excavation or local history studies to the general public, by publication and presentation of artefacts.

•To encourage awareness in community heritage, together with means of its investigation by giving guidance to those wishing to participate.

The Group is a member of the Council for British Archaeology, also the Federation of Archaeological Societies of Greater Manchester. We co-operate with the Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit and appropriate departments of local authority including Bury Museum, where finds from our excavations in Bury are usually kept.

Current activities include excavations at the site of Lowes Tenement near Park Farm, Walmersley, which take place every Wednesday during the summer, and to which volunteers are welcome.

If you have any questions, or would like to get involved then don't hesitate to contact us through the contact page. There are reports from past excavations that the group has been involved with or has run available to read on the Excavation Reports page and information about the history of Bury Archaeological Group can be found on the Group History page.

There is also a gallery of photographs from excavations past and present available to view, as well as links to related Internet sites.
